Passion Became A Profession

Photography has been a lifelong love for wedding photographer Wayne King.

From the time he was taught as a child by his father Bill, Wayne loved creating images.

The Unanderra man became more serious about his ``art" in the '70s, taking beautiful wildlife images at Cape York, the Atherton Tableland and other Australian locations, in between his work as a musician.

Friends were so impressed by his images that Wayne soon started doing a few weddings as favours and finally decided to turn his passion into a profession about seven years ago.

He still works full time at Metal Manufacturers and divides the weekends between doing wedding photography or video coverage of the couple's special day.

When he's requested to do both, he concentrates on the photos and has another person who can do the video imaging.

``I like to make each wedding individual. I cover it depending on the people, the styles varying from traditional, to contemporary and even fun," Wayne said.

Wayne consults with the couple to choose photographic locations, from the popular spots such as the Botanic Gardens, university, the beaches, court house, Belmore Basin, lighthouse, Rhododendron Gardens and Gleniffer Brae to secret locations such as rusty railway lines and broken down buildings.

``A lot of people don't know what they want and so I will make suggestions, while other people know exactly what they want," he said.

``I also carry some props, including a lace parasol, lace fans and a cupid in a bird bath.

``I also have a studio set up at the house and can do portrait photos too. Some couples even like to get portraits done before their wedding."

Wayne said he loved the people side of weddings and often developed such a rapport with clients that he was then booked by their wedding attendants or other guests when it came around to their special day.

``I like it when I get to pose people after the wedding ceremony at the various locations. I like to bring my ideas forward and I get a great response from the couples," he said.

Wayne continues to get bookings from couples as varied as police officers to motor cyclists with Harley-Davidsons, aiming to keep his charges to less than half the price of other major wedding photographers.
